About the Films

SAVING LUNA is the original film on which THE WHALE is based. SAVING LUNA was narrated by Michael Parfit, and it won more than two dozen awards from around the world. It tells the same story as THE WHALE – the amazing story of a lone, wild orca called Luna who tried to befriend people on the west coast of Vancouver Island. You can find out more about the original film at

Both films are documentaries. There are, however, differences in the two: SAVING LUNA has a first-person narrator and is therefore a more personal story. In THE WHALE, which is narrated by Ryan Reynolds, we've cut out some of the politics. We also made some thematic changes after all these years of thinking about the meaning of Luna's story. Which one is better? Hard for us to say; we've had people tell us they prefer SAVING LUNA and its personal tone, and others have said they like THE WHALE with its faster pace and the voice of Ryan Reynolds. Can't decide which one you'd like? We've got special pricing for a limited time if you order both.

Both are packed with extras, including four Luna music videos; a piece about respect for the orcas; an all-new interview with Ken Balcomb of the Center for Whale Research, who talks about his decades of work with Luna's family; and Luna's amazing birth story. All versions of THE WHALE have English, French and Spanish subtitles. (Sorry, subtitles are not available for SAVING LUNA.)
